Reflections on Our Impact in 2025 Featured

As we start a new year, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on our impact and the mahi we’ve done over the last 12 months.

By nature, coworking spaces see people come and go - all for different reasons. One thing we strive to keep constant is a welcoming, inclusive community centred on connection. Alongside this, we’ve implemented a number of sustainable practices and remain committed to supporting and championing our wider community. Below, we reflect on some of the impacts these initiatives have had over the past year.

Measurable Impact

Supporting the community with in-kind event space
This is something we’ve been doing for some time, recognising the importance of supporting community-aligned events. Last year alone, we hosted over 255 events free of charge in our building. These included groups such as Repair Café, Stand Tall, LinkedIn Local, Tinkd, Board Game Night, Tauranga Deaf Society, Rewiring Aotearoa, and Green Drinks.

Supporting community heroes with office space
In line with our commitment to community support, we launched our Community Hero initiative in June 2025, offering six months of free office space to worthy individuals and organisations. Since August 2025, we’ve provided in-kind sponsorship for two double offices and one single office.

Championing greener modes of transport
We provide a large garage space for residents who choose to cycle or eScooter to work, along with an onsite shower, complimentary toiletries, and a towel service. We’re also located in the heart of Tauranga’s public transport hub on Durham Street.

A significant number of our residents cycle, eScooter, or bus to the office. One way we track this is through The Wednesday Challenge, an initiative that encourages workplaces, schools, and universities to support greener commuting options. To date, our residents have logged over 408 journeys.

Reducing food waste through our worm farm
As part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, we operate two  worm farm onsite, managed by Why Waste. Instead of sending food waste to landfill, we feed it to our worms. Over the past 12 months, we estimate this has diverted approximately 350 litres of food waste from landfill.

Unmeasurable Impact

Volunteer hours
While we haven’t been able to quantify this, we know our residents contribute significant volunteer hours to local initiatives. This includes helping out at STEMFest, mentoring students in the Young Enterprise Scheme, or supporting local Startup Weekends. These initiatives are often championed by Basestation residents, and when extra help is needed, a call-out usually goes through our internal email network. We even wrote a blog about this last year.

Resident networks
As with any strong community, it’s impossible to fully measure the impact of the relationships formed here. Occasionally, we’re lucky enough to hear stories - one resident recently shared they received over 30 minutes of free electrical advice from a fellow member. We know these connections have led to friendships beyond the building, as well as new work opportunities.

Increasing sustainable practices
Alongside the worm food bins in each kitchen, we also provide clearly accessible recycling bins, making it easier for residents to dispose of items correctly. Our corridors are fitted with motion-sensor lighting, which automatically switches off when spaces aren’t in use.

When hosting shared lunches or breakfasts, we always offer vegetarian and vegan options, recognising these as more sustainable choices for the planet.

As mentioned earlier, we regularly support Repair Café, a volunteer-led group that offers monthly repair services for household items that might otherwise end up in landfill. They’ve been using our basement event space for over three years and have helped fix countless items along the way.

As we move into the year ahead, we’re proud of the impact we’ve had -  not just in numbers, but in the connections, collaboration, and care shown within our walls and beyond them. Coworking is about more than shared desks; it’s about people showing up for one another and for the community they’re part of. We’re grateful to our residents, partners, and customers who make this possible, and we look forward to continuing this mahi together in the year ahead.
