International residents - Michael Doerner
We are fortunate that Basestation attracts people from all over the world. This diversity contributes to the inclusive and vibrant culture we strive to foster in our coworking space.
Basestation was founded by three immigrants and one Kiwi! One of those immigrants was Michael Doerner, who originally hails from Germany. We realised we were well overdue to sit down with Michael and talk about what motivated him and his whānau to relocate to the other side of the world.
Why Social Capital Thrives in Coworking Spaces
According to Wikipedia, social capital is “a concept used in sociology and economics to define networks of relationships which are productive towards advancing the goals of individuals and groups.” The strength of an individual’s social network can have a profound impact on all aspects of life, from health to career opportunities. In a broader sense, social capital enables communities to grow, entrepreneurship to thrive, and ultimately creates the magic that allows everyone to flourish.
Reflections on Our Impact in 2025
As we start a new year, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on our impact and the mahi we’ve done over the last 12 months.
By nature, coworking spaces see people come and go - all for different reasons. One thing we strive to keep constant is a welcoming, inclusive community centred on connection. Alongside this, we’ve implemented a number of sustainable practices and remain committed to supporting and championing our wider community. Below, we reflect on some of the impacts these initiatives have had over the past year.
Connection and Kai at Basestation
Part of the human condition is to be social and find connection and belonging.
With remote working on the rise, more people are looking to join a coworking space so they can connect with others on a regular basis rather than just working from home.
At Basestation we understand the importance of connection and belonging, so we host regular events and opportunities for our residents to connect, network and create belonging together. Here are just some of the events, initiatives and opportunities we've hosted or got behind in the last 6 months!
