Celebrating 10 Years of Basestation: The Story of a Creative Hub (Part One)
Written by Ruth JamesOn November 6, Basestation marks a decade since its founding – ten years of providing a collaborative home for innovators, entrepreneurs, and remote workers in Tauranga. To celebrate, we sat down with two of the original founders, Steven Vincent and Pascale Hyboud-Peron, to revisit the journey that turned an office with too much space into a pioneering coworking community. The story of Basestation is one of creativity, resourcefulness, and a shared vision for an entrepreneurial community, so we’re sharing it in two parts. Here’s how it all began.

Kōrero with Ash Cross: Raising a hard of hearing child
Written by Ruth JamesLoud Shirt Day has always been a big deal in the Basestation social calendar - a day when we dress up in our most eccentric tops! Underneath all the fun though is a more serious message, a call of support for all New Zealanders who access sound with cochlear implants. This prompted us to sit down and kōrero with one of our residents, Ash who has a young daughter, Emilia, who was born hard of hearing.
As it’s Mental Health Awareness Week, we thought it would be a good opportunity to look at the correlation of good mental health and coworking.
To end Māori language week, we wanted to share a blog which captures a kōrero we had with three people who have connections with Basestation. We wanted a variety of perspectives, lived experiences and their relationship to Aoteraoa and Te Reo Māori. We spoke to Manaia, Erin, and Pascale.
National Coding Week - and a good excuse for us to talk about Grace Hopper, the namesake of one of our meeting rooms
Written by Ruth JamesMonday 16th September marks the start of National Coding Week. Now in its 11th year, this week sets out to inspire individuals of all ages to learn and embrace coding skills.
The 5th September is International Day of Charities!
We thought this would be a great excuse to share a bit about one of the charities at Basestation - Stand Tall. Founded by Pascale Hyboud-Peron (also one of the co-founders of Basestation) - Stand Tall works alongside rangatahi to grow and develop their entrepreneur skills and mindset. One of the many programmes Stand Tall delivers in the Bay of Plenty is, the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).
The Future of Work - and how the coworking movement fits in!
Written by Ruth JamesIn a recent white paper published by the World Economic Forum looking at the Rise of Global Digital Jobs, it mentions three main factors that are most likely to transform business and the way we work in the next five years:
1st August is World Wide Web Day, the day is observed to commemorate the World Wide Web (www) and its impact on the world. As one of our meeting rooms is named after Sir Tim Berners-Lee (the founder of the web), it felt fitting that we should honor the day with a blog about him and the massive impact the creation of the World Wide Web has had!
